Dr. Nicole Dorfan
My areas of expertise
I specialize in evidence-based treatment for anxiety, depression, worry, obsessive compulsive disorder, trauma, and related difficulties. I also greatly enjoy working with women in the prenatal and postpartum period. I am certified as a cognitive behavioural therapist by the Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies.
In the past I worked at St. Paul’s Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital where I provided group therapy services for the treatment of panic disorder, generalized anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and mixed anxiety disorders.
I was responsible for training psychiatry residents and psychology graduate students in cognitive behavioural therapy, and supervised therapy cases for individuals with social anxiety, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other conditions. I also previously had a private practice at the Vancouver CBT Centre.
My approach to therapy
I approach therapy as a collaborative partnership in which therapy goals and individualized treatment plans are mutually developed. I strive to bring warmth, compassion, humour and genuine caring into sessions as I provide practical hands-on tools to help clients make meaningful changes in their lives.
I primarily use cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques, where we examine how negative emotions such as anxiety and sadness are maintained by behaviour patterns (e.g., avoidance, withdrawal, compulsive rituals) and unhelpful thinking patterns (e.g., catastrophic thinking, negative labels about ourselves or others). Together we will work to shift these patterns into more effective ways of managing difficult situations and emotional states.
I received my Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of British Columbia and completed my clinical internship at the Seattle Veterans Affairs Medical Center. I have published journal articles and presented my research at numerous scientific conferences on the topic of contamination fears, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social phobia. I enjoy teaching and have instructed courses in the UBC Department of Psychology and the Department of Psychiatry.
In addition I have provided education to physicians and community therapists on the topic of cognitive behavioural therapy for anxiety and depression.
I am a Registered Psychologist in the province of British Columbia.
